About The Charity
Through a network of chapters across the globe, the mission of Variety – the Children’s Charity is to provide essential resources to children with serious illness, disability or disadvantage. Incorporated in 2015, our local tent, Variety of the National Capital Region (Variety DC) serves families in Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia, with a special focus on children with mobility disabilities. By partnering with individual supporters, corporate donors and community foundations, Variety DC provides financial grants and life-changing adaptive equipment to meet the basic needs of these special families. The World Health Organization estimates that there are 93 million children aged O to 14 living with a moderate to severe disability worldwide.
Children with disabilities often have poorer health outcomes, a lower education achievements and higher levels of poverty.
According to the World Health Organization, the unmet need for vital children’s assistive and medical devices educational opportunities and social inclusion is extremely high.
Of the 93 million,
13 million children live with severe difficulties.
The functioning of a child should not be seen in isolation but in the context of the family and community. The economic and social costs borne by the family and society are high.
