All children are special. However, Variety – the Children’s Charity’s purpose is to serve children who are less fortunate – children who live and grow up with a serious illness, disability or disadvantage. These are extra special children who require a special kind of help.
Variety was founded in Pittsburgh, PA in 1927 by a group in the film industry. A year later, on Christmas Eve 1928, Variety supported its first child when a baby was left on the front steps of a local theater with a note from her mother asking the charity to care for her daughter. Since then, Variety has grown nationally and internationally, to a multi-million dollar philanthropic charity that supports children in need around the world.
Variety of the National Capital Region is the first U.S.-based chapter to open in more than a decade. We are just starting, but we have ambitious plans to grow rapidly and support many children, their families, and communities, in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
To improve the quality of life for children with mobility challenges and their families by providing funding for services, equipment and/or recreational experiences for the children. Variety – the Children’s Charity of the National Capital Region will focus on children in need in DC, MD, and VA.
