Forte was born at 25 weeks and spent the first 4+ months of his life in the NICU fighting to grow and thrive. He suffered multiple obstacles including 8 intubations, a perforated intestine, ROP surgery, and brain injury resulting in periventricular leukomalacia.
As a result, Forte needs assistance in most of his daily activities including sitting, walking, eating, dressing, and communicating. Specifically, he has worked on improving his strength and mobility walking in a loaned Rifton walker.
He progressed from only being able to take a couple steps with assistance to now walking up to two blocks almost independently in his walker. Forte grew considerably and his loaned walker no longer supported his height, weight and balance needs. His high tone caused his legs to scissor and step on his own feet.
Forte also expends more energy due to his subglottic stenosis, scarring and narrowing of his airway due to trauma from multiple intubations. This means he gets out of breath more quickly, so any mechanism increasing his efficiency moving also allows him greater endurance.
Through the generous giving of our corporate sponsors and individual donors, we were delighted to provide him with his own Rifton Pacer that supports his growth and needs. We look forward to tracking his growth and progress!
