My name is Angelina, I’m 11 years old and a “little person” meaning I have dwarfism. My legs are very bowed and I’ve had many surgeries to straighten them.
I’d always wanted to ride a bike with my family and friends but I need a special bike to fit me and work with my legs. My physical therapist told my parents about Variety’s Freedom program and helped us apply for a special bike. My therapist said if I got the bike, it would strengthen my legs and make me healthier. That sounded okay but really I just wanted to ride a bike like my 4 brothers, 3 sisters and my friends.
It happened! Variety granted a big red tricycle made especially for me. It was like the best Christmas and birthday presents ever! I ride my bike every day, outside in good weather and on a special stand inside when it is too cold. I love my bike so much; it is fun and has helped me lose almost 30 pounds. This has inspired my family to get healthy too. Being happy with how I look has given me more confidence and I feel much stronger. Now that my legs are straighter, I am able to run and swim in summer, which I enjoy.
My dream is that Variety can grant bikes to all kids with physical challenges, kids just like me, so they can experience the fun I have and grow stronger.
